Our Story and Inspiration
Everything is energy and vibration. From the beginning was the breath-sound of Creation which gave birth to all things. The sound of the bamboo flute (shinobue/shakuhachi) of Japan was the elemental inspiration to these unique, one of a kind works of art you see on this site.
Hello, my name is Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos and I began playing the shakuhachi Japanese bamboo flute in 1992 (30 years) and crafting the flute for 20. Through my study of bamboo flutes in Japan, I and my life partner, the ceramic artist Sandra Ramos, married and moved to Vancouver, BC in 1997. After struggling with some difficult health issues and trying to make a living as a musician and working odd jobs (teaching ESL, landscaping gardening, etc.) on the side, we finally took the leap into our freedom from the city life and moved to the idyllic Sunshine Coast of BC in 2003; a haven for artists and creatives - a place of great natural beauty and quietude - where we set up our studios.
While harvesting bamboo in Japan on one of the Shakuhachi Roots Pilgrimages which I have been organizing for the last 20 or so years, the idea of making pendants out of bamboo roots rang out in my mind. Then while helping Sandra during a craft show in Vancouver, I met a woman wearing an amber pendant and then the idea of putting amber into bamboo roots gave rise to the first prototype of the Sunroot Pendant. Then while on a tour through Saskatchewan with one of my musical school show groups, I encountered the Moldavite stone for the first time which opened me up to the world of stone energy in a powerful and profound way.
Sunroot was created from the inspiration I received from living a life playing and crafting Japanese bamboo flutes and from the world of crystals. I strive to embody the ideals of honor, passion, creativity, connection, healing, and the fire of love in our hearts.
Each piece is unique and one of kind.
The design is intimately connected with nature.
Each piece has a spiritual significance.
